A1 TEAM MALAYSIA READY FOR COMPETITIVE USA A1 GRAND PRIX EVENT
The tenth round of the A1 Grand Prix series completed the first practice day ahead of Sunday's Sprint and Feature races at Laguna Seca Raceway, California, one of the USA's most popular motor racing circuits.
Famed for its 'Corkscrew' section of track which tests driver bravery with a blind crest approach to a section of corners which drop through 20 feet, A1 Team Malaysia driver Alex Yoong experienced the track for the first time today and enjoyed his first taste of this 'awesome' track. Yoong finished twelfth at the end of the first practice session.
Yoong said after the session, "It was an enjoyable hour on this unique track. It's fast and has some interesting corners, not least the corkscrew, which needs total commitment. I'm happy with our running, but with only one hour of practice time today, we've only just started to set the car up. Tomorrow, with two hours of practice running, will give us a better idea of how quick we can be for qualifying. We weren't out on track at the end of the session when most teams put in their quickest lap, as we had a minor mechanical problem. We ran in the top ten for most of the session and that's where I think we are at the moment."
Jack Cunningham, A1 Team Malaysia Team Principal, was pleased with the team's opening session performance, saying, "It's good to see us running so strongly so quickly, especially as there are five or six top-line drivers who have raced here before and yet Alex is new to the track. We'll be looking to continue at this level as the weekend unfolds, so that we can achieve our goal of securing more World Cup of Motorsport championship points."
