Brands Hatch, 28 April 2007; A1 Team Ireland produced a much improved qualifying result today securing 12th position for tomorrow's sprint race, having struggled to find a competitive set-up in the practice this morning. Lead driver Richard Lyons set an individual best lap time of 1m15.951s, compared to the fastest lap of pole sitter Robbie Kerr who produced a lap of 1m15.072s.
Having struggled to find a suitable set-up in the morning practice session, the car's performance was dramatically improved when the team switched to new tyres for the qualifying runs. A gain of almost two seconds was achieved over the times set in the morning practice, leading to a sense of optimism for the sprint and feature races tomorrow. With a sell-out crowd expected at Brands Hatch, and close to 300 sponsors, guests and friends of the team attending, the teams' focus is on attaining a top six finish.
Richard Lyons; Qualified 12th, 2m28.899s on Aggregate; "The weekend had a difficult start due to undetermined problems in practice, but the car was transformed as soon as we had the opportunity to use new tyres. Most teams only found up to one second a lap, but we were able to find almost two seconds which points to a tyre problem in earlier practice runs. I am now really looking forward to participating in the race which will be closest to home for me, in front of a crowd consisting of our sponsors, fans and friends."
Gary Anderson, Technical Director; "We struggled through yesterday and this morning to get our car to respond to changes in set-up. We went into qualifying a bit unsure of how the car would perform, and it responded better than expected. However, we still feel that we could have improved our time if more could have been done in practice."
Mark Gallagher, Team Principal; "The team has worked very hard to make a good step forward in performance this weekend. After Richard's performance in the qualifying sessions, which will see him starting from the sixth row of the grid, we feel that this will certainly give Richard the opportunity to race for points and hopefully be in the top 10 for the feature race tomorrow."
