Frustrating end to Beijing feature race for A1 TEAM USA Historical Race in China's Capital
BEIJING, China -- It was a groundbreaking weekend as A1GP--The World Cup of Motorsport hosted the first ever street circuit in Beijing, China. Yet it was a weekend filled with unexpected twists as the series dealt with the frustrations of constructing and modifying the track for the two days leading up to the race. A1 TEAM USA experienced an equally frustrating end to the weekend as overheated brakes forced the car out of Sunday's feature.
"We had the perfect strategy for the weekend and for the feature race. Everything was working flawlessly until the problem with the right rear tire. If we could have just had a clean pitstop and then finished the race, we would have been third," said driver Phil Giebler. "It's just another missed opportunity for points". Giebler was running 10th in the 68-lap feature when he made the mandatory pit stop on the 21st lap.
Overheated brakes are frequently a negative consequence of street track racing. Speed on these twisting circuits is usually limited which reduces airflow and the subsequent cooling of the brakes. In total, four teams were eliminated from today's competition due to brake failure, and a majority of teams reported problems with their brakes.
"Strategy meant everything in this race due to limited passing ability," team owner Rick Weidinger said. "I thought Greg Wheeler put together a winning strategy. We were in position to make a big gain in the Championship points this weekend but it did not happen for us. Still, it was exciting for all of us at A1 TEAM USA to be part of such a historical event in Beijing China."
A1 Team USA placed 11th in the A1GP Sprint Race in Beijing on Sunday and currently holds the 12th place in A1GP standings with 10 points. Next up, A1 TEAM USA heads to Malaysia for the fourth race of the season at Sepang International Circuit on November 26th.
