Will join official A1GP tests at Silverstone on the 3rd & 4th Aug
A1 Team Malaysia today confirms that the team has been allocated chassis no. 18 and engine no. 19 as their first A1GP car to be delivered in time for the official A1GP test sessions in Silverstone scheduled for the 3rd and 4th Aug this month.
Alex Yoong, who is in Silverstone circuit for the tests, said, "This is good news as the number 18 means 'bound to prosper' it should be good news at least for the millions of Malaysian Chinese at home."
The A1 Grand Prix Championship - World Cup of Motorsports have confirmed 19 of the maximum 26 national teams so far. Included in the 19 teams are Malaysia, South Africa, Britain, Australia, Brazil, Portugal, Canada, China, Lebanon, Pakistan, India, Netherlands, Mexico, New Zealand and Turkey, covering six continents.
Three former Formula 1 drivers have been confirmed driving for their countries so far. These are Pedro Lamy driving for Portugal, Jos Verstappen for the Netherlands and Alex Yoong for Malaysia.
Another 2 former F1 drivers are rumoured to be joining their national teams. One is former Jaguar driver Antonio Pizzonia rumoured to drive for the Ronaldo owned A1 Team Brazil while the name of the possible fifth former F1 driver is yet to be released.
Joining these drivers are a host of F3000 and F3 drivers as well as drivers from other series all vying to represent their countries through their national A1GP teams.
Twelve rounds have been provionally confirmed and inscribed with the FIA with the first race scheduled at Brands Hatch near London on September 25.
Malaysia's Sepang International Circuit near Kuala Lumpur will host round 5 on November 20.
Malaysia's other driver who will share driving duties with Yoong is current GP2 campaigner, Fairuz Fauzy. He will join the A1 Team Malaysia at the next test at the Paul Ricard circuit in France on the 25-26 August 2005.
