Racing Driver Tom Coronel real SEAT ambassador
New SEAT Leon for TOM CORONEL in WTCC 2006
Racing driver Tom Coronel will drive a brand new SEAT Leon WTCC in the FIA WTCC (World Touring Car Championship). The Dutchman's main goal this year will be winning the Independents Trophy for privateers. For SEAT in the Netherlands it means continuing a solid and logical relationship based on a strategy to emphasize the sporting image of SEAT by means of active presence in motorsports. On a national level SEAT is supporting the basic class of motorsports in the Netherlands with the Shell Helix SEAT Cupra Cup. On the highest level of touring car racing SEAT supports Tom Coronel in the WTCC with the brand new SEAT Leon.
For Tom Coronel a dream is about to come true. "Actually there are several dreams", the Dutchman said. "As a driver you always want to compete at the highest level. In my opinion the WTCC is the highest level of touring car racing. Two years ago I won the Independents Trophy for privateers, but then the championship was still European. Now there is a World title there to be won. Last year we came close, but Lady Luck was not with me in the last few races. Things are looking good now. Never before I was assured of my racing plans this early in the season. After I was called by Xeno Grimmelt , the General Manager of Pon Car, the Dutch SEAT importer, things started to move quickly. So this year there will again be a SEAT team Holland with Tom Coronel ".
Xeno Grimmelt: "Both SEAT Sport, the factory department that coordinates all motorsports activities, and we from SEAT the Netherlands were impressed by Tom Coronel last year. Not just because of his results in the WTCC, but also by his off track activities for SEAT. He has become a real SEAT ambassador. This was an important factor in our decision to support him with a new SEAT Leon WTCC. We have now set the first step. The next one will be finding a team to run the car. Of course we will make this decision together with SEAT Sports. We will announce the new sponsors for this project early March at the official presentation of SEAT Team Holland.
The new Leon WTCC of SEAT Team Holland will be especially built for Tom Coronel according to the latest 2006 specifications. This means that the car is powered by a 4 valve engine that delivers more than 260 bHp Besides that Tom and his team will have a dedicated engineer who also stays in close contact with SEAT Sports.
Tom Coronel continues: "This is what you like to have as a driver, but unfortunately it is not always possible. Now we can really build up for the first race. The relationship with SEAT has become tighter and tighter during the year. A lot of attention was paid to the things we were doing in a race weekend. In the Netherlands I have become an ambassador for SEAT. As last year I will present the program RaceXperience, showing all motorsports action from SEAT in the Netherlands and of course my own WTCC races. Furthermore I am often present at the SEAT dealer organisations in the country. Sometimes to open a new showroom, a presentation or a race in the simulator, and if I'm lucky for a burn out with a quick SEAT. I feel really comfortable with it and I will give it my all to regain the Independents Trophy this year. Of course I am looking forward to my first laps in the new Leon and I am sure I won't be bored for a second. We really have to bring this Championship back to the Netherlands!"
