Tiago Monteiro wrapped up his trip to Curitiba, Brazil, with a points finish in the 16th of 24 FIA World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) races.
Despite an excellent qualifying session, Tiago Monteiro did not have an easy task ahead of him at the wheel of his SEAT Leon 1.6 liter Turbo. Eighth on the starting grid in the first race, he was crashed into by Cerqui in the first race lap. The violent contact destroyed his sedan's front right suspension. "The front wheel was destroyed, the mechanics managed to repair the car in time for the second race, they only had 15 minutes and I want to thank them for their extraordinary work," Tiago Monteiro declared.
Third on the starting grid in the second race, Tiago Monteiro had a good start and long resisted the return of the Chevrolets, before giving in to the attacks of the fastest cars in the championship. Despite everything, he managed to secure points for 9th place. "My chances were quickly blocked in the first race. Not long after the start, several cars cut off the chicane without being penalized and I found myself in the middle of the pack. And then Cerqui hit me, the suspension and steering were destroyed. The crew performed a miracle, getting the car ready in time, congratulations go to them!"
Despite the repair, the SEAT Leon #18 car was not totally restored, and Tiago Monteiro had a hard time fending off the attacks of his competitors. "I fought well, and I think we put on a good show for the fans. I did everything I could, but I knew it was just a question of time before the Chevrolets passed me. I was losing times in the straights and the car was not well-balanced. At the end of the day, I am satisfied to bring home some points."
