Yellow and red flags spoil Tiago Monteiro's qualifying session
Qualifying for the first meeting of the 2012 FIA World Touring Car Championship, which takes place this weekend at Monza's Autodromo did not return the result Tiago Monteiro was expecting.
Both of the Portuguese driver's attempts at flying laps with the Tuenti Racing Team were spoiled by a yellow and red flag respectively.
These two twists of fate seriously handicapped Tiago's chances of getting a good spot on the starting grid for the Italian races. He will be starting from the 8th row of the the starting grid behind the wheel of the SEAT Leon TDI. "It's a scenario that every driver fears. It's a game of chance, timing when to leave the pits. I made two attempts with two sets of new tyres and I got two flags, a yellow one and a red one!" Tiago Monteiro lamented. "It's too bad because even if we could not aim for the pole position, we could have been well-positioned in the chase group."
The red flag interrupted the session two minutes from the end of the first qualifying session. "I did try to redo a lap in the hope of crossing the timing line to be able to do a final flying lap, however, but it was not possible. 16th position on the grid will force me to work even harder tomorrow but I won't give up," Tiago concluded.
The first Monza race starts at 12:20 pm, and the second at 4:05 pm. Both races will be broadcast on Eurosport.
