Exit conditioned by the qualifying result for BMW Team Italy-Spain at Pau, fourth round of the WTCC 2008. During the 45 minutes of qualifying, valid for the starting grid of race one, Alex Zanardi has been constantly within the first eight drivers, until the last trial, vanished by yellow flags in the third sector of the track. The Bolognese driver scored good times in the first two sectors that would have been worth a position within the first three rows.
Pushed back to the twelfth position, Zanardi kept a good race pace throughout the whole first manche but due to the twisted nature of the street French track he did not manage to recover positions. Similar situation in race two, started under the safety car due to the heavy rain falling on the track. In the final stages of the race an exciting battle took place between the Italian and Jorg Muller.
The wet tarmac that characterized free practice sessions prevented Felix Porteiro to define a satisfactory setup for qualifying. The characteristics of the track, that do not favour overtakings, inevitably influenced the races' result for the young Spanish talent, despite the level of competitiveness showed today.
Roberto Ravaglia (Team Principal):
"The outcome of our weekend has been decided yesterday more than today. Despite the result, Zanardi has been really competitive and if he did not find yellow flags in his fastest lap yesterday, his results would have been probably different today.
"The same holds true for Porteiro, without an optimal setup he certainly lost several positions on the starting grid. We did not score points but we are a tough team and more motivated than ever. We are still optimist and, sure about our potential we are looking forward to Brno".
