SEAT driver Tom Coronel is looking forward to 'home race' at Okayama

Okayama, October 29th, 2010 - "I have driven my first miles with a race car in Japan at Okayama, I have scored my maiden victory in the WTCC there, so it is a little bit of a home race for me." SEAT driver Tom Coronel makes no secret of the fact that he is looking forward to the penultimate race meeting of the season in the FIA World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) at the circuit of Okayama in Japan this weekend (October 29th till 31st). There, he will be racing again with his SEAT Leon TDI in the colours of McGregor and TW Steel.

During the last few days, however, motor racing for once wasn't the main talking point for the Coronel family: last Saturday, Tom Coronel and his partner Paulien Zwart became the proud parents of son Rocco Cruz, who was born at 2.52 pm with a weight of 3590 grams. "Rocco and Paulien are fine, our daughter Carmen is incredibly proud of her little brother and of course, we are very happy, too. People say that having children makes you go slower as a race driver, but I don't believe that at all. Quite the opposite: you are driving faster, because you want to be back home with your family sooner," a smiling Tom Coronel says.

Tom Coronel has achieved many of his successes in motor racing in Japan: he won the championship titles in Japanese Formula 3 and Formula Nippon, he was a race winner in the Japanese Super GT series and two years ago, he also scored his maiden race win in the World Touring Car Championship in Japan. "For me, it is a fantastic country and I always like to go there very much," he says. "Motorsport is incredibly popular, there are at least a dozen magnificent circuits and there are always many fans. No doubt that this will be the case again this year. Many people still know me over there from the years during which I was racing in Japan myself."

The Okayama International Circuit is hosting the WTCC for the third time and also bids farewell to the series, because the Japanese World Championship round will be held at the Suzuka Grand Prix circuit from next year onwards. "Also a great venue", says Tom Coronel, although he is now looking forward to this weekend's races at Okayama. The current weather forecast shows that rain is expected on Saturday. "It is raining there quite often, the circuit is located in the forests and surrounded by hills. Especially in changeable conditions, you need to be clever. That is how I won there two years ago..."
