O'Young remains 6th in independents

O’Young remains upbeat heading into the season finale, where he will be racing on his favorite street circuit

(4 November 2013, Hong Kong) It may not have been a satisfactory race weekend for Darryl O’Young as the ROAL Motorsport race car driver took home only one point in Shanghai, taking his season tally to 60 as he remained sixth on the Yokohama Drivers’ Trophy standings. But the Hong Kong-based O’Young remains upbeat heading into the season finale in Macau in two weeks’ time, where he will be racing on his favorite street circuit.

Starting 18th on the grid for both rounds in Shanghai, the rain that came minutes before the opening round did Darryl no favor at all. His decision to go with slicks made the opening few laps very difficult, and he was later caught up in a collision which damaged his car’s alignment severely. O’Young finished with an independent P8 and overall P20 eventually, grabbing the final point on offer.

The 33-year-old then had a great start in the second round, shooting to overall P8 after just the first turn. However, damages from the first round began to set in later, with traction problems costing O’Young a lot. In the end, a collision with another driver in the hairpin resulted with a broken front suspension, putting a full stop to Darryl’s adventure in Shanghai.

“The frustrations in WTCC this year continue for me, as I have had a very inconsistent season. There is only one chance remaining to earn a podium result and I hope to do this in front of all the fans at my home race in Macau,” said O’Young after a disappointing outing in the mainland.

Following the Race of China, the WTCC welcomes its final race in Macau in two weeks’ time, where double points are awarded for each of the drivers who scored. O’Young claimed back-to-back independent victories in Macau last season.

Qualifying 1 at China – Independent P7 & Overall P18 “It was an extremely close fought session but here in Shanghai, the BMW's lost really too much on the long back straight. I was 0.4 seconds from making it into Q2.”

Race 1 at China (2013 round 21) – Independent P8 & Overall P20 “The rain came minutes before the start of the race. It was a very difficult decision to go on wet tires or slicks as it was right in between.”

Race 2 at China (2013 round 22) – Independent P17 & Overall P30 “I had the best start of my season today moving from P18 up to P8 after the first turn. I struggled for traction due to some rear damage from race 1 and was soon caught by the cars behind. I did everything I could to defend and had a great battle with several cars.”
