World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) racer James Nash could win the Yokohama Independents award this coming weekend at the Shanghai International Circuit in China, the penultimate event of this year’s series.

The much-coveted award is the prize for the top driver in the WTCC without major support from a manufacturer. Notable past winners of the award include Tom Coronel (twice), Stefano D’Aste and Norbert Michelsz the reigning champion. Nash should he win, would become the first British driver ever to win the award and it would sit nicely on his CV with the similar award he won in the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) in 2011.

However, despite being on the threshold of winning the Independent World title, Nash’s eyes are very much on securing a top three result in the overall Championship. The Bamboo Engineering Chevrolet Cruze driver is currently fourth in the standings with just two points separating him from third placed Tom Chilton (RML Chevrolet Cruze) with four races to go, two in mainland China this coming weekend and then two final races in Macau a fortnight later.

James Nash: “I can’t wait to get out to China. I think Shanghai’s long straights should suit the Chevrolet Cruze well despite carrying top penalty weight as always.”

” Even though I’m told that it is just about possible that I could win the Independent World title this weekend, though more likely in Macau in two week’s time, my focus will instead be on the battle at the top of the overall standings. Yvan Muller has already secured the overall title but for the three of us behind him, Gabriele Tarquini, Tom Chilton and me the two remaining podium slots are still up for grabs.”

“It would be a fantastic achievement both for me personally and also for the Bamboo Engineering team if we can get a top three result in the Championship as well as winning the Independent’s award. We’ll have beaten some top teams and drivers in both to get there should we manage it and I’m determined to give it my very best shot for all concerned.”
