Works Citroens dominate as expected, with local hero beating two Frenchman and a Chinese.
Reigning World Touring Car Champion Jose Maria Lopez will start Sunday’s opening round of 2015 from pole position after setting the fastest lap in qualifying at Autódromo Termas de Río Hondo in Argentina.
The local hero, who had dominated both free practice sessions, lapped his Citroen C-Elysee in 1:45.461 in the single-lap shoot-out session, which put him well over a 1.2s clear of teammate Yvan Muller, who managed a 1:46.701.
The other works Citroens will line up third and fourth, with both Sebastien Loeb and Ma Qing Hua making mistakes on their crucial laps.
Tiago Monteiro was best of the rest in his Honda Civic, but his laptime of 1m47.633 was only good enough for fifth.
The fastest Chevrolet was Tom Chilton in sixth, ahead of Gabriele Tarquini’s works Honda.
James Thompson qualified 10th in the first session, which ensures him of pole position for tomorrow’s second race in the new Lada Vesta.
