Turkish delight for Rydell and SEAT Sport
Rickard Rydell's SEAT Sport Leon will start Round 15 of the FIA World Touring Car Championship from pole position, after the experienced Swede perfectly judged the Turkish weather. Dark clouds were gathering over the Istanbul Park circuit as the 30-minute qualifying session began, which meant the first few laps would be crucial. Soon after Rydell went fastest on his first "flying" lap, rain started to fall and the wet track then prevented anyone from improving on Rickard's time.
In all, SEAT Sport cars occupy 3 of the top 4 grid positions, with Gabriele Tarquini starting from 3rd and Yvan Muller from 4th. A gearbox oil seal failed on Tarquini's car during the morning's 2nd practice session, but his mechanics changed the seal in time for qualifying, while Muller confessed to being a little surprised at starting from the 2nd row of the grid. Getting an aerodynamic "tow" is crucial to setting a good qualifying time at Istanbul and Yvan had been helping his teammates when the rain started to fall, with his turn to get the benefit of a tow still to come.
