Disappointment in Argentina for Nash

Despite two podium finishes in the Independent category in the WTCC's debut event in Argentina, James Nash was disappointed.

James Nash scored a double Independent’s podium with two third places and two top ten results overall at the latest rounds of the World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) at the Autódromo Termas de Rio Hondo circuit in northwest Argentina.

Nevertheless, Nash was disappointed with the results, particularly as his main rival for the independent driver championship award, Michel Kykjaer took two second places to slightly increase his lead in the points standing over Nash from just four points before the races to nine points afterwards.

Adding to the frustration, Nash had been well paced early on in both races and had clashed with Nykjaer in each

In the opening encounter and in the midst of a chain of seven cars fighting over second place overall, the Milton Keynes-based driver appeared to lock the brakes on his Chevrolet Cruze and he hit his rival’s similar car squarely in the back at the end of the main straight. In the later race and fighting for third place this time, Nykjaer returned the compliment, albeit on a different part of the circuit.

Unfortunately, on both occasions Nash’s car came off far the worst of the two and he did well thereafter to salvage independent podiums and overall World Championship points with a pair of top ten finishes.

Nevertheless, in spite of ultimately a disappointing and rather frustrating weekend, Nash afterwards was in a philosophical frame of mind.

James Nash: “Of course it isn’t the pair of race results that we wanted but there are still eight races to go before the championship is decided. That’s a lot of racing and anything can happen.”

“In a sense, and with the benefit hindsight I suppose, we might actually come to look back at this weekend and think it didn’t work out too badly after all. We finished despite having a damaged car, we scored valuable points and we didn’t lose out too much to Nykjaer.”

“The two race defining incidents were I suppose what one might call ‘typical touring car’ stuff. It is a shame though that my car came off worst in both clashes and that after each it was simply a case of nursing the car home rather than competing. Nevertheless, these things happen and we live to fight another day and we shall.”

“Disappointed? Yes. Was it a complete disaster? No.”

The next rounds of the 2013 WTCC take place at Sonoma Raceway, California, USA on 8th September
