Inside the Motorhome: Bas Leinders
"It's great to race in Zolder, my home-circuit!"
The Superfund World Series by Nissan first-ever visit to Zolder (Belgium)
Barcelona, 10th April 2003 - Bas Leinders, last year third fastest driver in the 2002 World Series edition, takes on the challenge of winning the championship with his new team Racing Engineering. Now he's living in Andalucía, in San Lúcar de Barrameda, in the company of his wife and Esteban, his first son recently born. The next 27th of April, Leinders will have the opportunity to prove all his experience in Zolder, his home-circuit, with one main objective: taking a victory back home in front of his own crowd.
Q: What are your spectatives about racing in your own country?
I have lots of them. I'm very happy that the Superfund World Series goes to Belgium, especially to Zolder, my hometown circuit, where I first won my first race in Formula Junior. It will be very exciting, lots of people I know will come to see me race against drivers as Montagny, Gené or Bernoldi.
Q: Do you have a special tip to the other drivers for the race at Zolder?
Zolder is not a hard circuit. The most complicated part is at the Chicanes, but the rest of the lap is pretty plain and you can go really fast.
Q: Do you have any special strategy for your next race?
Just one: to be really fast during all the weekend.
Q: Now, tell us about what happened in Jarama?
We had a few problems during the Qualifying Sessions, but at the first race I took a good start. Unfortunately, I lost control and got out of the lap. I lost three positions. And after the safety car passed, Angel Burgueño hit me twice. And I was forced to abandon.
Q: Was it hard to race under that heavy rain?
No, I don't think we had a problem with that. The drivers of the World Series have a lot of experience and we are ready to race even in the worst conditions.
Q: So what will you do in Belgium apart from racing?
I will visit my family and my friends. I will go there a little bit before, to go home for Easter. I'm currently living in Spain so I will have the opportunity to enjoy the food of my country again.
Q: Tell us about the opinion of the Belgium people about motorsports?
In my country, motor racing is a very loved sport because we have had a lot of very good drivers in the past, like Jacky Ickx, the former Formula 1 driver. In Belgium everybody knows the World Series since there are some Belgium people involved. The races are retransmitted in the TV.
Q: Tell us about the experience living in Spain?
I like Spain a lot. Right now I'm living in San Lúcar de Barrameda (Andalucía) and I can tell you is a totally different experience from living Belgium. Here in Andalucía the shops open at half past five, and In Belgium they are closed at six. Is really fun, now my house is next to the beach. I really like a lot the food and the wine, and I also got to visit some museums. Last weekend I went to La Alhambra (Granada). People in Belgium have the impression that Spain is only the beach and sun, but there is much more than that.
