Molina Battles to Finish on Spa Podium

Greg Mansell (#3):
Start Position: 17th Race Position: 13th

Miguel Molina (#4):
Start position: 6th Race Position: 3rd

Once again Miguel Molina and Greg Mansell proved to be amongst the quickest drivers in race conditions and Miguel Molina scored his, and Ultimate Motorsports, first podium of the season.

Qualifying

Greg Mansell took part in the Group A Qualifying session, posting a time of 2m04.262 on his last of 9 laps of the seven kilometre Spa Francorchamps circuit. As in Barcelona he missed the cut for the SuperPole by less just 0.15 seconds. Miguel Molina took part in the Group B session and qualified for the SuperPole with a time of 2m04.355. In the SuperPole session the Spanish driver posted the third fastest time of the session with a time of 2m03.029 to qualifying in 6th place for the opening race of the weekend and 3rd in Sunday's race.

Race 1

At the start Miguel Molina made steady progress at the start, holding his 6th place grid position for the first four laps of the race before moving ahead of Charles Pic on lap 5 and then Marco Barba to finish lap 10 in 4th place.

Greg Mansell made up one place on the opening lap from his 17th place on the grid, but lost ground on lap 3 before beginning a fight back that saw the young English driver pass Fairuz Fauzy on lap 6 and Frankie Provenzano on lap 9. Mansell continued to work his way forward, moving up two further places to end the race in 13th.

After passing Barba, Miguel Molina then got stuck behind Daniil Move and for the next ten laps tried to find a way past the Russian, finally moving into the final podium scoring place three laps from the chequered flag. Molina quickly opened up a gap and started to close on the second placed driver Bertrand Baguette but there wasn't enough time to get on terms with the Belgian driver before the chequered flag.

Miguel Molina: "I had a good fight with Move, but I was able to overtake him so it was OK and we finished in P3. I did a good start but I lost a position on the back straight. Our car was really good and I was faster than the other drivers and I could overtake. We need to work hard for tomorrow's race and take a lot of points from the race. If we can take a podium so much the better and I'm confident we can do this."

Greg Mansell: "It was an interesting race. We got a pretty hairy start; got a good start off the line but got caught up and was pushed out by one of the drivers, so I dropped down to 18th. A bit of contact in the first corner and in the second corner, but the car held together well and we closed an eleven second gap in about six or seven laps. At that time I was the quickest car on the track and I managed to make up a few more spots and finished up second quickest overall; only a tenth off pole. We've got the pace but it's too late in the weekend. I'm starting 15th tomorrow but I think we're there with the car and hopefully get a good result tomorrow."

Colin Morgan, Team Manager: "We're very happy with everything. Both cars had good race pace and it is good to be on the podium again. Looking forward to tomorrows race and hopefully we can do a little bit better; another podium for Miguel and get Greg into the top ten. The drivers are very happy with the balance and the speed of the cars in race trim, so looking forward to the second race."

Round 4 of the World Series by Renault is live on Eurosport on Sunday 3 May at 12:45 (BST)
