Tech 1 Racing out to defend its titles at Monza!
Tech 1 Racing is ready to defend its titles in the blue ribbon discipline of the World Series by Renault after an inter season marked by the arrival of two new Formula Renault 3.5s in its new workshops in Toulouse. The 2008 championship kicks off this weekend on the very fast Monza circuit.
Things have speeded up at Tech 1 Racing since mid-February. After receiving and assembling the first 2008 Renault 3.5, the team from Toulouse went to the Valencia circuit for two days' collective testing. Julien Jousse and Charles Pic took it in turns to familiarise themselves with their new machine. A few days later Renault Sport delivered the second car and the team got down to preparing for the test on the Barcelona circuit on 8th/9th/10th April.
Tech 1 Racing set up a complimentary programme for both drivers to get the best out of the three days. "Julien Jousse is our yardstick as it's his second year in the formula. He was put in charge of development, which consisted of running through the maximum number of set-ups," explains Simon Abadie. "As it was a new car we had a lot of things to test: aerodynamics, suspension tyres etc. Julien did a great job. He completed his programme and I think we've found a few very interesting things."
In car no.2 Charles Pic worked on out-and-out performance. "Since he's climbed into the Renault 3.5 Charles has been among the quickest. But he needed a lot more running time to really feel confident. Everything went off well for him too and he didn't spin once, so he was able to rack up the maximum number of laps and gather experience. His third-quickest time overall over the three days proved again just how fast he is," states Simon.
Over the three days Julien and Charles covered 137 and 140 laps respectively - almost 1300 kilometres!
With just a day or so to go before the first round the Tech 1 Racing boss is quietly confident. "We're doing the first two meetings at Monza and Spa with only a week's break in between. It's crucial to be ready for the season's kick off, as a good part of the championship could be decided early on. I'm confident as we have a stable technical crew, and we know exactly where we are in our development programme. This being said I can't wait to be at Monza to see where we stand in relation to our rivals!"
