Zonta takes both pole positions, almost half a second fastest than the best lap of F3000.
Bas Leinders takes advantage from Montagny in both grids.
Sao Paulo, 7 December 2002 - The Dallara Nissan SN01 car has lowed today the F3000 official lap record at the circuit of Interlagos (2002, BOURDEAIS, 1.26.056). Interlagos holds the last round of the Telefónica World Series by Nissan. The Dallara Nissan SN01 becomes the fastest car at this track except F1. Narain Karthikeyan lapped 1:25.143 in an amazing free practice performance and Ricardo Zonta lapped 1:25.479 in qualifying.
Ricardo Zonta steadily pulled away to score hi 7th pole of the season after improving from free practice and will share first front row with Jean Christophe Ravier. Second row for Bas Leinders and local Jaime Melo. Franck Montagny broke the front wing and left suspension of his car in a crash. He ended the qualifying in 5th place beside Antonio García.
In the second Qualifying, the Brazilian reigning champion reached the quickest time lapping 1:25.47, half a second faster than the F3000 official qualifying lap record. The session started with the threat of the rain, but it was only a false alarm. Justin Wilson took second spot in his Racing Engineering car just 0.146 seconds behind Zonta. Bas Leinders and rookie Ricardo Sperafico, with the same set up of Burgueño, will start from the second row. Franck Montagny will start the second race from the fourth row on the grid after a flat-out work of his mechanics. Ander Vilariño's car suffered an engine failure and he had to content to see the session from the pit wall. The Real Sociedad FC will start the race from the last postion of the grid.
"This morning we just couldn't believe that the times from Karthikeyan's were real! But now just have a look at the list of times: these are the facts. I'm at home again and I will be very proud to give two victories to the crowd".
"I won't say Montagny had bad luck! It was just his own mistake. In Curitiba we started from the 20th position and in the World Series everything may happen - I've come here to win both races and reach the vice-championship"
"We used new tyres in first qualifying and it has been ruinous. In second qualifying, we started with the old ones and things continue badly. We put a new set again and suddenly everything was perfect. We have to work a little more the in the slow corners but it will be OK for the races. If we win at least we will put some emotion to this Series ".
Jean C. Ravier
"Our goal is working to improve. This is the first time I drive here, I love this track. In the first qualifying I had a problem with the braking pump, so it wasn't that good".
The schedule for tomorrow (local time)
