Draco Racing back into the top ten as Ghiotto takes 6th place finish in Spa

The Italian young gun Luca Ghiotto took the flag in 6th place.

The first race of the Spa weekend, fourth round of the F.Renault 3.5 championship, saw Draco Racing get back into the points thanks to an amazing performance from Luca Ghiotto. The Italian young gun took the flag in 6th place at the end of a race that he managed flawlessly despite having to cope with a delayed start (due to issues with the circuit lights), a big first-lap pile-up and a consequent Safety-Car deployment.

Ghiotto, who had lined-up on Row 6 after being hampered by a recurring steering issue in Qualifying, took advantage of the first lap mayhem to climb up to 7th and from then on he engaged in a battle with fellow competitor Sorensen. Making the most of a quick and balanced car he chased the Danish driver controlling the gap lap after lap, and on the penultimate lap he delivered a bold overtaking move at Eau Rouge, crossing the line in P6 in front of a speechless WSR paddock.

Unfortunately, Pietro Fantin's race wasn't as exciting. The Brazilian talent had high expectations after securing 6th place in the morning qualifying session, but his race was over on lap 5, when Van Buuren punted him from behind sending him into the tyre wall at Les Combes.

Pietro Fantin (Q1 - P6; R1 - DNF): "Taking into consideration how many places I lost at the restart the race wouldn't have been great for us, but our pace was good enough to grab some points and it's a pity that we couldn't get to the finish. Unluckily Van Buuren hit me right on the rear left wheel and the momentum was so strong that catching the spin was just impossible and I ended up in the tyre wall. Anyway in terms of performance we have quite a good pace, so we should be able to hit back tomorrow".

Luca Ghiotto (Q1 - P11; R1 - P6): "From 6th row it wasn't an easy race, but I tried to remain as focused as possible, lapping on a good pace and trying to make the most of any opportunity. That allowed me to profit from other's misfortunes to climb as high as P7 behind Sorensen, and once I was there I tried to use a bit of strategy. I pressed him, staying close enough to make him feel the need to use DRS. At the same time, staying in his wake allowed me to save some DRS time for later into the race, and that proved paramount giving me enough speed to put him under huge pressure in the last few laps. Finally he made a mistake missing the apex at La Source, and I ran wheel to wheel with him on the downill section to Eau Rouge. I expected him to lift as he was on the outside, but he kept his foot down and we entered.
