Qualifying woes hinder Kerr's day at Donington

Robbie Kerr's hopes of 'home' advantage heading into this weekend's World Series by Renault double-header at Donington Park were quickly thwarted as chronic understeer in this morning's qualifying session relegated him to a lowly 23rd on the grid for this afternoon's race. The Brit, racing for Team KTR, fought back to a 12th place finish ending the 21 lap race just two places shy of the points.

Race 1, Qualifying (Pole -- Adrian Zaugg, 1m18.283s)

Near-perfect conditions greeted the field for qualifying this morning as they hit the 2.5-mile Grand Prix Circuit at Donington Park. Almost from the off Kerr found himself fighting a lack of front-end grip and as a result the former British F3 Champion struggled to mount a challenge at the top of the timesheets. Changes made since the previous day's practice session, where similar problems had prevailed, failed to reverse Kerr's fortunes and he ended the session 12th fastest in his 15 car group to qualify a disappointing 23rd overall.

Race 1, 21 Laps (Winner -- Alx Danielsson, Comtec Racing)

As has been the case for much of the season, faced with the challenge of fighting his way through the order Kerr responded with gusto and this afternoon's race proved no exception. Charging on the run to Redgate, Robbie's fight back started under braking at the first turn as he picked off a handful of his rivals to see his way through to 16th by the end of the opening lap. From there a combination of skilful passing and others misfortune saw Kerr climb to 12th by the chequered flag, the Burbage racer overcoming his handling problems with an encouraging display of grit and determination.

Robbie Kerr - #5 Team KTR:

"The car was better in the race but we have a real problem with qualifying set-up. Hopefully heading into tomorrow's qualifying we can learn from today's tribulations because when you start that far back you have virtually no chance of making an impression on the lead. We'll just have to go for it tomorrow as we've really got nothing to lose!"

Race 2 (29 Laps), including a mandatory pit-stop, starts tomorrow at 1pm GMT.
