FAIRUZ REFLECTS ON A GREAT YEAR OF RACING
A fantastic season of racing came to an end at the grand prix circuit of Barcelona on Sunday and Fairuz Fauzy claimed another points finish to round of a terrific year for the young Malaysian.
Driving this season for Cram Competition, under the direction of the experienced team principal Roly Vincini, Fairuz took eighth place in the final Formula Renault World Series 3.5 race at Barcelona to claim a total of 51 points which gives the 25-year-old eleventh place in the World Series drivers' standings.
2007 has been a rewarding experience for Fairuz who claimed three podium finishes over the course of the Renault World Series meetings which have visited no fewer than nine different countries between April and October. In Dallara chassis powered by 3.5-litre V6 Renault engines, delivering more than 425bhp, Fairuz became one of the key pace setters as the 17-race calendar unfolded.
He claimed his first points back at the season opener at Monza in April and hasn't looked back as he marched on through the rankings in the number 19 'Macho' sponsored Dallara. Despite failing to score at the Nurburgring and on the streets of Monaco, he returned after the mid-summer six week break to score a fantastic third place at the Hungaroring.
At the subsequent World Series meeting at the awesome Spa-Francorchamps, Fairuz topped qualifying to claim his only pole position of the season -- but at what a circuit to achieve it! On race day he went one better than in Hungary and claimed second place to spray the celebratory champagne from the famous Spa podium.
A strong run in the second half of the year saw Fairuz take a succession of points at Magny-Cours, Estoril and this weekend at Barcelona. After finishing 12th on Saturday, he took three more points on Sunday with a strong eighth place finish.
The Malaysian, who has also gathered significant Formula 1 mileage testing for the Etihad Aldar Spyker Formula 1 Team, is hoping to build on his strong season as he tackles the 2008 season.
"It's been a great year and I have to thank Roly and all of my mechanics and the Cram crew for giving me such a fantastic car in 2007," said Fairuz. "We've shown, particularly in the second half of the season how competitive we are and the points are a product of all the efforts that we have put into the team. Next season we need to build on what we've achieved this year and be able to keep errors to a minimum. On occasion this year we've thrown away points while running in a strong position and in 2008 we have to ensure that we don't make the same mistakes. We now have to get as much testing under our belt in the off-season so we are in the best possible shape to come out fighting at the start of a new year of racing in 2008!"
