DANIELSSON TAKES A BRILLANT 2ND PLACE IN BILBAO RACE 2
Alx Danielsson earned his first podium finish of this season at the difficult urban circuit of Bilbao with a 2nd place behind Will Power. From 3rd place on the grid, Alx had to stay behind Pavlovic with no hope of passing him at the start (the race started behind the safety car) or on the track as any overtaking was impossible on the Bilbao track. This situation helped Power who managed to build a gap between himself and Pavlovic, who was slowing down the DAMS driver. When the Yugoslavian pitted early to change his front wheels DAMS decided to keep Alx on track a little bit longer in order to take some time on the track and come out of the pit stop in front of Pavlovic. After an excellent wheel change by his mechanics, Alx returned to the track a few seconds ahead of his main opponent of the day and then continued to reach the finish line and take 2nd place.
In race 1, the team expected Alx to stay on the track without risking a pass attempt in order to take a few points and not risk damaging the car that would have compromised race 2. From 10th place on the grid Alx finished 8th.
Jean-Paul Driot, Team Owner : "We knew this result would come, we had no doubts about our potential. Alx has been quick over the whole weekend, the team has worked well, the car was fast, the pit stop was perfect, and we chose a good strategy to pass Pavlovic. Now we must keep the pressure on to confirm this result in the coming events."
Alx Danielsson : "This result comes at a good time, I am very happy with this 2nd place and we are now in a position that we were aiming for at the beginning of the season. I want to thank the team, especially for the very fast pit stop and the strategy, which helped me to take 2nd place, otherwise it would not have been possible to pass Pavlovic on the track. I look forward to Oschersleben, we will work very hard to continue in this positive direction."
Raffaele Giammaria crashed in race 1 and due to the damage done to the car he did not take part in the 2nd race because the time was too short to repair the car.
