Werner Daemen finishes 12th after difficult weekend in Sugo.
Werner Daemen rode his Van Zon Honda TKR CBR600RR to 12th place in the World Supersport race at Sugo in Japan after a weekend troubled by bad weather.
The third round of the World Supersport championship proved to be a tough one for the Van Zon Honda TKR team after poor weather played havoc with qualifying. While the warm sunshine that greeted the riders on Sunday was welcome, it also meant that many teams were left guessing tyre choice and set up for the race after having very little dry time on the circuit.
"The race itself was very good," said Daemen. "My lap times were good considering the lack of dry set up time we had before the race. The problem is that if you don't get a good grid position in Supersport racing then it's very difficult to get a good result in the race." Werner finished 12th after winning a race long battle with Simone Sanna.
It was a weekend to forget for Daemen's team mate Iain MacPherson. The tough Scot crashed out in the second qualifying session and then again in the Sunday morning warm up rendering his number one bike useless for the race. When the teams are away from Europe on the so-called fly-away rounds it can be really tough to fix problems or get crashed bikes repaired. Usually it's a case of making do with whatever's left, which is exactly the situation MacPherson found himself in for Sunday's race.
"Unfortunately I crashed on both bikes this weekend and was forced to race on the least damaged of the two," explained Iain MacPherson. "The bike wasn't quite right so it was just a matter of getting it around for a finish." Iain recognised that he's crashed too many times for comfort this year, "I definitely need to stop crashing!" MacPherson finished the race in 17th position.
The team now travel back to Europe to get ready for the next round at the super-fast Monza circuit in Italy on May 18th.
