Yamaha Celebrates 50th Anniversary With World First Sponsorship of 2005 Superbike World Championship Round at Phillip Island

Yamaha Motor Australia have become the first motorcycle manufacturer to take title sponsorship of a Superbike World Championship event, it was announced at the official launch of the 2005 Yamaha Phillip Island Superbike World Championship round today.

Some of Australia's leading riders competing in the Superbike World Championship and Supersport World Championship joined The Hon John Thwaites MP, Acting Premier of Victoria, Lindsay Fox, Founder and former Chairman, Linfox Group and Yamaha Motor Australia Director Steven Cotterell for the announcement which will see Yamaha as title sponsor for round two of the 2005 Superbike World Championship.

The 2005 Yamaha Phillip Island Superbike World Championship round will be held at Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit April 1-3.

Yamaha Motor Australia Director, Steven Cotterell said sponsorship of the 2005 Yamaha Phillip Island Superbike World Championship round was significant in promoting Yamaha's return to the Superbike World Championship with the very successful YZF-R1 motorcycle.

"2004 was Yamaha's most successful season," Cotterell said.

"Valentino Rossi won the MotoGP world championship, Stefan Everts and Stefan Merriman both took out world off road titles, Chad Reed won the THQ AMA Supercross Championship and the YZF-R1 totally dominated the European Superstock Championship taking the out the first four championship positions.

"This sponsorship marks the beginning of our celebrations for Yamaha's 50th anniversary year. We are also celebrating the phenomenal success of the R1 Motorcycle and Yamaha's return to the Superbike World Championship," Cotterell said

"2005 is arguably the most important year for Yamaha worldwide as we mark our anniversary by challenging for all the major world championships.

"Yamaha's involvement in the Superbike World Championship ensures that we are now competing in all major championships in all disciplines of motorcycle racing worldwide," Cotterell concluded.

The Yamaha Italia team rejoins the Superbike World Championship with a two rider team after a four year absence. Australian rider Andrew Pitt will be teamed with Noriyuki Haga to campaign the powerful YZF-R1

Yamaha Motor Germany will manage Yamaha's sole official entry in the Supersport World Championship with Australians Kevin Curtain and Broc Parkes riding the 2005 model YZF-R6.
