Bayliss extends lead with San Marino victory
Troy Bayliss (Ducati Infostrada - Michelin) takes win and second place to stretch advantage in scorching heat at Misano, San Marino as Ben Bostrom follows runner-up place to Bayliss with race victory. Determined Bayliss holds 47-point lead with five of 13 rounds remaining.
Bayliss won a thrilling first race after tailing team-mate Bostrom throughout before making a move on the final lap to take his fourth win of the year and his second successive victory after winning the wet race in the last round in Germany.
Bostrom took second and Gregorio Lavilla third, after passing Colin Edwards (Castrol Honda - Michelin) with three laps to go. Lavilla was later given a five-second penalty and relegated to fourth place after officials decided his move on Edwards occurred under a "caution" flag. That decision handed Edwards third place.
Bostrom and Neil pole position man Neil Hodgson did battle in the early stages of the second race before Bostrom took control. Hodgson looked set for runner-up place before tyre trouble forced him to slow on the last two laps, crossing the line in 16th place.
Lavilla took third place with Aprilia wild card rider Alessandro Antonello fourth and Tady Okada (Castrol Honda - Michelin) fifth. Edwards crashed on the 10th lap, remounted and crossed the finish line in 11th place.
Edwards will be hoping for a better display in his home round at Laguna Seca in two weeks' time as he bids to close the gap at the head of the points standings to fellow-Michelin rider Bayliss.
Reigning world champion Jorg Teuchert took victory in an exciting race, passing Iain MacPherson on the last of 23 laps to secure 23 points and close on championship leader Paolo Casoli, third behind polesetter MacPherson at Misano.
Fabien Foret took fourth place on his Honda while Chris Vermeulen (Castrol Honda - Michelin Pilot) came from 11th place on the grid to secure his best finish of the year with fifth place in the Misano heat.
Casoli holds a 12-point lead over Teuchert with four rounds remaining. The Supersport riders now face a five-week break before round eight at Brands Hatch (GB) on July 29.
