Ten Kate top in sweltering Misano heat

Chris Vermeulen took the provisional pole position in this afternoon's qualifying ahead of the San Marino round of the World Supersport championship.

The Australian, who celebrated his 21st Birthday yesterday, took pole despite struggling to find enough clear track to get the best out of his Pirelli qualifying tyre.

"There were loads of guys just trying to get a tow off me," said Vermeulen, "I rolled around trying to let them past and my qualifying tyre went cold, otherwise I reckon I would have got a better lap time. Apart from that the session went well, we've been concentrating on trying to find a race tyre that will go the distance in this heat and on the famously abrasive track surface here."

Vermeulen's team mate Karl Muggeridge finished the session down at ninth fastest after running out of time on his final qualifying tyre.

"We spent all this morning in free practice trying some settings that took us in the wrong direction. This afternoon we had to go back to square one and that took us most of the session. The clock just timed out on me when I was on my out lap with my qualifier on, but at least before that we had made some real progress on the set up."

The heat, the bumps and that abrasive track surface, means lots of work for Andre Stamsnijder of WP Suspension and Eddie Roberts of Pirelli, as team manager Ronald ten Kate confirmed:

"Both guys have worked very hard together with the team to try to find a set up that will be good for race distance in this heat.

"I'm happy to see Chris go so well, and although Karl is ninth at the moment, I am confident that is just a result of him missing out on his final fast lap. There will be more to come tomorrow, I'm sure of that!"
