Difficult conditions present Ten Kate Honda with a challenge at Lausitzring.
Heavy rain meant that the World Supersport championship first timed qualifying session started on a wet track here at Lausitzring today (Friday 7 June). While Iain MacPherson made the right tyre choice as the track dried to grab provisional second place, Fabien Foret went in the wrong direction, finishing the session in an unaccustomed 21st place.
"The track here dries very slowly," explained Foret, "so I stayed with a full wet setup. Unfortunately the track was a little drier towards the end of the session than I had expected. But the forecast is better for Saturday so I believe the grid will change completely."
His team mate Iain MacPherson was obviously happy to have climbed up to provisional second on the grid. "I went for a drier set up for the last few laps, it paid off. I'm feeling very comfortable on the bike now. The WP Suspension is working well and I'm very happy with the performance of the Pirelli tyres, even in difficult conditions like this. I've really gelled with the bike over the last few meetings and I feel very confident now."
Team manager Ronald ten Kate was philosophical about what had proved to be a tough session for the team. "When the weather is like this things are a bit of a lottery. You can make a tyre choice that seems right at the time but then after the session you realise you went in the wrong direction. The surface here drains very slowly, and in a manner that isn't very predictable, this means it's even harder to make set up decisions."
With local weather forecasts predicting a positive change in the weather for Saturday and Sunday Foret should have ample opportunity to improve his grid position, "Even if it is wet again I know he'll improve on his grid position, today he was simply unlucky," said ten Kate.
