Laguna Seca (USA), 11 July 2004: Regis Laconi and James Toseland were in the thick of the action today in front of a massive 93,000 Laguna Seca crowd as the Ducati Fila riders battled for fourth place in race 1. The second race was a big improvement for the Ducati Fila duo as Toseland hounded today's double race winner Chris Vermeulen (Honda) for the win and Laconi got the better of Noriyuki Haga (Renegade Ducati) to take third.
After race 1 Toseland declared: "The tyre started going off with about ten laps to go after I had done the early laps in high 26s so that was disappointing. I had a close battle with Regis which got a bit out of hand a couple of times but we both stayed on. It was just close racing and good to watch."
"The big problem is that at the beginning I was not fast enough and I lost time in trying to follow the others" declared Laconi. "It was only around half way through that I started to come good. I tried my best to come back and had a big fight with James but he stopped me and we lost time for the front so Martin and Chili were able to get clear. It was more than close between me and James because we touched ten times but it was OK".
Race 2 provided more of the same action but this time the Ducati Fila pair were battling for the top positions throughout.
"The battle was a bit frustrating at times but all credit to Chris" commented James. "When he came under me at turn 2 I thought it was game over but I got settled into a good rhythm and kept with him but he didn't give me an inch or leave a gap to pass and all I could do was follow him home. We made a slight change to the rear setting to get a bit more grip so all credit to the team for that."
"Race 2 was very hard" declared Regis. "We did a good job between the races and the rear setting was much better. I made a few small mistakes behind Chris and James and after that it was difficult to come back so third is good for the championship. I had a very big fight with Haga until the last lap which was good for the show. It got me the points and that's the main thing."
