Edwards blitzes to dramatic world title.
Colin Edwards (Castrol Honda - Michelin) rockets to world championship victory with fantastic double win at Imola while title rival Troy Bayliss (Ducati Infostrada - Michelin) battles to the end to complete season in thrilling fashion as Michelin dominates both podiums.
Colin Edwards (Castrol Honda - Michelin) secured a second world title with a dramatic double victory in Sunday^Òs final round of the World Superbike championship at Imola in Italy.
Edwards was relentless in his search for a ninth straight race win and to complete a dramatic turnaround in the series after being 58 points behind Troy Bayliss (Ducati Infostrada - Michelin) at one stage.
He won Sunday^Òs two races from Bayliss, the first by 0.5s and the second by 0.9s as the pair did battle in front of 97,000 fans to end the season with arguably the best race.
^ÓThat second race was as tough as races get,^Ô said Edwards. ^ÓBut we^Òd come here well prepared after the test. Michelin learnt a lot at the test and came here with great race rubber.^Ô
Bayliss took two runner-up places to end the championship as runner-up after winning in 2001, he said: ^ÓI^Òm really disappointed not to have won but Colin wanted it bad today and he was tough to beat.^Ô
Bayliss added: ^ÓI tried as hard as I could but on the day it wasn^Òt enough. It^Òs been a great year as far as the racing and the championship goes and I think between Colin and me we just about summed the season up in that last race.^Ô
Ruben Xaus (Ducati Infostrada - Michelin) completed a perfect day for Michelin as the Spaniard finished third in both races and came close to helping Bayliss overhaul Edwards with a burst of speed late in the second race.
