The Heat is on at Brno as Yamaha Lead the Way

The first day of the ninth round of the World Superbike Championship got off to a hot and sticky start today. Unfortunately, it wasn't sticky enough for the tyres as track temperatures rose to over 50 degrees during the day, reducing grip and adding to the riders' challenge.

Haga was the top placed man at the end of day one, taking the top slot with a 2'01.603. He started strongly and went second in the first half of the session with Corser leading the way for the majority of the session. Haga was then knocked down to fourth as Bayliss snatched first from Corser and Rolfo slid in between the team mates. Undeterred Haga proceeded to slip into first place with the first 2'01 lap of the session and then Corser took second in the dying seconds of qualifying.

Shinichi Nakatomi made good progress today, taking provisional 13th qualifying spot for the Team Yamaha YZF squad. He took almost a second off his time during the day to sit just behind Lanzi in 12th. Nakatomi has had good luck at Brno previously, having finished eighth in the first race here last year, and will be looking to repeat his success this year.

Noriyuki Haga (1st - 2'01.603 - Yamaha Motor Italia WSB Team)
"Today has been good but I haven't yet found the right tyre setting. The heat has made it very difficult to find a tyre that'll do race distance. We had the same choice of tyres as at the test, but the track temperatures are so different - that's the biggest issue to overcome tomorrow. I also tried a different setting to what I had here at testing but it didn't increase my confidence at all. I want to spend some time tomorrow on finding a better set-up for this heat as, although the weather on Sunday might be cooler, it might also be as hot. If I had to I would be happy to race tomorrow but I'd rather have an extra day to really get it right!"

Troy Corser (2nd - 2'01.724 - Yamaha Motor Italia WSB Team)
"We made some good setting improvements from this morning to this afternoon but unfortunately we didn't make much progress on the tyre settings. I don't think we've ever ridden Pirelli's in such high track temperatures before and I found they were losing the little side grip they have. We're going to have to try and set the bike up the help the tyre. I was happy with the set-up we had at the end of the test here but it just doesn't feel the same now because of the difference in weather. Having said all of that I felt good on the bike, even the heat wasn't much of a problem for me. It's good to have achieved a good time at the end of the day but we still need to find the consistency."

Massimo Meregalli (Team Coordinator, Yamaha Motor Italia WSB Team)
"Today was more or less what we saw in the test. Tomorrow all need to do is make the final adjustments; we just hope it'll be dry and not wet like the forecast says. Most of the settings are in the right position; all we have to do is a long run to make sure that the tyre choice is right."

Shinichi Nakatomi (13th - 2'03.346 - Team Yamaha YZF)
"Today has been hot and hard work but good. I am happy with the progress we have made and I am hoping for a good result this weekend. I would like to equal or beat my eighth place finish from last year."
