Van Merksteijn jr. survives toughest day in WRC Rallye Deutschland well
The Van Merksteijn Motorsport team of Peter van Merksteijn jr. and Erwin Mombaerts managed to climb two places during the second day of the WRC Rallye Deutschland to a tenth position in the overall classification. An excellent result for Peter jr. in the DS3 WRC who survived the very difficult stages of today very well and managed to stay away from any problems.
After a short service of just 10 minutes early in the morning, the cars in the First tarmac event this year in the WRC left the area around Trier for the stages near Baumholder. Peter van Merksteijn jr. and his co-driver Erwin Mombaerts drove the first stages of the day at their own pace which made the driving for Peter jr. reasonably easy and managed to maintain his 11th position after completing these stages that do not suit him. Arena Panzerplatte, the 34 kilometer long special stage lined with the dangerous Hinkelsteine, went very well with an 11th place for the Van Merksteijn Motorsport Citroën DS3 WRC.
Back in the service in Trier Peter jr. was reasonably pleased with his performance despite that he dropped a place as Latvala climbed from place 13 to the top ten. It was a tight battle all morning between Van Merksteijn jr., Wilson and Araújo who stayed within 30 second of each other.
After the afternoon service, Peter jr. and Erwin had to drive the three difficult stages once more before they could enjoy the Panzerplatte again. Peter jr. reduced his pace a bit on these three tricky stages and kept the time loss to a minimum. As a result of the retirement for the day of Latvala on the penultimate stage, the Van Merksteijn Motorsport DS3 WRC started the final stage of the day at Baumholder in 11th position. As usual, Peter jr. had a very good drive through the long and difficult stage and clocking the ninth fastest time he stayed again out of trouble where among others Sebastien Loeb and Dennis Kuipers lost a lot of time as a result of a puncture.
At the end of this second day in the WRC Rallye Deutschland, Peter jr. was very happy that he came this far in a rally for the first time this season and finished the day in tenth position. “Today was a very tough day for me, except for the panzerplatte I don’t like today’s stages” according to Peter van Merksteijn jr. “I really enjoyed myself on the stage at Baumholder and made a beautiful jump both times. The cooperation with “Momby” went very well today and he did a perfect job.”
