Successful first test for Peter van
On Monday, Peter van Merksteijn jr. had his first test session with the new Citroen DS3 WRC in which he will take part this season in the World Rally Championship. In cooperation with Citroen Racing, the Van Merksteijn Motorsport driver drove in the French Vosges region his first kilometers with the new generation World Rally Car.
After not having driven in a World rally Car for more than a year, Peter jr. sat yesterday behind the wheel of the DS3 WRC test car of Citroen Racing. Spread over the day, Peter jr. made numerous runs with the new car accumulation over 150 kilometers at speed together with his regular co-driver Eddy Chevaillier. Already after the first few runs in the morning, Peter jr. was very impressed with the potential of the car.
The Citroen DS3 WRC is a completely new car build in accordance with the new WRC regulations with a 1.6 liter turbocharged engine. After driving the old WRC specification car with the larger engine for several years, changing to the new generation WRC meant that the driver had to work a lot harder in this car. "The DS3 WRC drives fantastic. We drove a lot of kilometers in the car and they gave me all the opportunity to familiarize myself with this car" told an enthusiastic Van Merksteijn jr. afterwards.
New for the 2011 season are the Michelin tires but they gave a perfect response on the technical stage where the car was tested yesterday. "The car drives like a go-kart and I got the feeling that the car responds very well to what I want to do with it" continues Peter jr.. "We drove with various different setups during the day and I am very impressed with the car. It is a very professional team at Citroen Racing and I am returning home with a very positive feeling."
Peter van Merksteijn jr. will make his WRC debut at Citroen with the DS3 WRC during the Rally Portugal held from March 24th until 27th. A total of 10 rounds are planned this season for the 28 year old Dutchman. "Before the start of the Rally Portugal we will test one more time with the DS3 WRC so Peter jr. will have an optimum preparation for his first rally with the new car" said Gerard Grouve, team manager of Van Merksteijn Motorsport. "It is a very pleasant and open cooperation with the people of Citroen Racing. Therefore we have very good expectations for the coming season."
