Subaru's Petter Solberg spun and went off the road during special stage 4, the repeat of the first stage of the day. He continued but lost 52 seconds in the process.

Both McRae and Martin (Ford) lost time during the longest stage of the event, the 36.73km Petreto-Ampaza, with a lack of grip from their Pirelli's.

The Ford's of McRae, Sainz and Duval all had problems at the start of the first two stages of the day - McRae had difficulty selecting first gear at the start of both stages, Sainz' Focus jumped out of first gear into neutral at the start of SS1 and Duval also stalled twice at the start of SS1 having never done a hill start in the Focus before.

Both Makinen (Subaru) and Rovanpera (Peugeot) did not react to their pace notes at the end of stage 1, both slowing before the end of the flying finish where the stage finished in 2001, losing a bit of time in the process.

Hyundai newcomer Tomasz Kuchar retired at the end of SS1 after experiencing small fires on the brakes of all wheels. He was forced to drive using the brakes after his throttle got stuck open, clearly putting a strain on the brakes. The fires were extinguished and after getting started again he had to stop at the end of the stage.
