TOP WRC DRIVER CONFIRMED FOR RALLY IRELAND

Australian Chris Atkinson has been confirmed as an entry in Rally Ireland the WRC candidate event which takes place in March. The young Subaru driver is in his second year as a WRC 'works' driver with UK based Prodrive. Other top international drivers are expected to be announced by Rally Ireland next week after the close of entries.

26 year old Atkinson, team mate of ex World Champion, Petter Solberg will be driving a Group N Subaru. "It's unfamiliar territory for me, but from what I've heard it's going to be a lot of fun" said Atkinson. "I've never even been to Ireland before, let alone competed there, but I know it's a country where rallying is very popular and the local competition is bound to be pretty fierce. But it's great to have the opportunity to get more asphalt kilometres under my belt so I'm really looking forward to it."

'It's a great boost to have Chris compete in our rally this year, he is one of the sports up and coming drivers and provides a great challenge for the Irish drivers" said Rally Ireland event secretary, Claire Walsh. With FIA Sporting Delegate, Charles Reynolds, observing the rally, organisers have been eagerly putting as many WRC elements into the rally as possible. In 2005 Rally Ireland was the first event outside the WRC to use the WRC timing system, and this system will once again be in place for the 2006 event. A new WRC style shakedown is to be introduced on the Atlantic coast on the Friday afternoon.
