Headlines

- Makinen out on Section 11 with a broken cam belt - McRae out after Section 10 with a seized engine - Liatti out in Section 9 with a seized engine - Katto out in Section 8 after losing a wheel and damaging the suspension & transmission - Sainz rolled in Section 7 - top 10 cars are seperated by over 2 hours!

- Overheating problems decimated the Safari Rally field on the second leg, and even those who survived did not escape unscathed.  Both the 2-litre and Gp N class leaders had overheating problems. Harri Rovanpera (SEAT) slowed down to ease the problem, and Luis Climent (Mitsubishi) drove through the broiling day with the in-car heater turned on full to try and draw the engine temperature down

- Although recent torrential rains have held off and the route is mostly dry and dusty, several of the 2WD cars have been stuck in sand, and most competitors have lost or rearranged their bodywork crunching through the ruts, ditches, drifts and washaways that the floods have left behind.  - The second leg promises to be even tougher and rougher - two of the sections had tobe modified because the organisers found parts were impassable – in a tractor!
