Notes

- all teams and drivers have endured some problems in todays stage: - please see detailed notes below for each stage - Auriol rolled lightly on the last stage - The Toyota team ran with mousse-filled tyres on the fast and rocky 108 km second Competitive Section from Oltepesi to Ngong. Mousse has probably never been used before on a section that is both so long and high speed. Ford, Mitsubishi and Subaru are not using the puncture-resistant compound.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Section 1, Super Special Stage, Nairobi 4.30km Start: 09:41 hrs Notes: - This fun showpiece of 4.3 kms at the Ngong Racecourse stadium provided a variety of tight and sweeping bends and one thumping ditch as a foretaste of things to come. More important than the minor time differences, it gave the drivers a welcome chance to burst their early adrenaline bubbles before heading for the 100km-plus sections out in Kenya's southern wilds.

Winners Av Speed: 83.23kmph

Section 3, Hunter's Lookout - Timbuctoo 71.90 km Start: 12.45 hrs Notes: - This was one of the toughest sections of the leg; the road is riddled with deep and sharp drifts scoured out by recent rains and some still full of mud, and speeds were expected to be well down - Makinen and Burns had to weave around a cow and a donkey - Carlos Sainz (Toyota) continued to struggle with a stiff power steering, and all the team cars changed all their shock-absorbers at the next service, - The Ford, Mitsubishi and Toyota teams, running on Michelin, are considering using Mousse throughout the event.
