Rally Italia won't be the final challenge of the 2004 season. It will however be the last of the new features of this year's calendar which, with the promotion of Mexico and Japan to WRC status and the re-timing of Rally GB, have been more widespread than usual. Unlike the trips to North America and Asia though, the Rally of Sardinia takes place on European soil which means that pre-event testing was possible. That said, according to the drivers, that opportunity to get an early idea of the terrain failed to provide definitive answers to many of the questions traditionally raised by new events, notably concerning the way surfaces are likely to evolve between two runs.
