Tuesday 24 November 1998- LEG THREE (Stages 22 - 28) Last stage drama denies Sainz third World Championship title Carlos Sainz and Luis Moya had a third World Rally Championship snatched from them just 500 metres from the end of the final stage of the Rally of Great Britain. The Spanish duo were running in fourth place in their Toyota Castrol Team Corolla, a result which would have brought them the title, when the engine failed. The car coasted to a halt and the crew extinguished a small engine fire which followed. "It is impossible to put into words how I feel," said Sainz after the incident. "We had backed off earlier today because of the bad conditions and were doing all we needed for the championship. It is so difficult to comprehend what has happened, especially so close to the end of the rally." Team-mates Didier Auriol and Denis Giraudet were forced out of the event on the second day when a loss of drive halted their car. "It is difficult to explain how we all feel. It is heartbreaking for Carlos, Luis and the whole team to come so close, to put in so much effort, and have it end like this," said Ove Andersson, President of Toyota Motorsport.
