Headlines

- Makinen/Mannisenmäki: `The plan was to attack on the first stage, and you can see what we did. We are going flat-out, but under control.´ - Grönholm loses over three and a half minutes in a ditch (SS16) - two biggest complaints appear to be a) not enough power and b) sore necks from landing all the jumps! - Juha Kankkunen: "Either the man is too old or the car is too old!" (the car won’t go as fast as he’d like!) - Gardemeister rolled on SS14 but continues - Vatanen in two wheel drive (SS17) - Rovanpera loses 6 minutes changing a tyre and spinning - Radstrom off in SS17 - Eriksson Hyundai’s Dave Whitehead confirmed the retirement on day one was caused by a faulty crank sensor which was probably damaged by a stone.

SS 10, Leustu 23,57km

Notes: - Mäkinen At the finish of SS10 (Leustu), the first stage of Leg 2, the leader said: `We started OK. On the very last part of the stage I couldn´t hit the right lines. I’m using a different tyre to yesterday, and it seems to be working better.´ - Kankkunen At the finish of SS10 (Leustu): `It felt good. The stage is a bit sticky, but the tyres are OK.´ - Burns Had a spin in SS10, stalling the engine and losing around 20 seconds. - Vatanen `I started the day a bit carefully, but this stage woke me up. There is a big crowd in there which is a great thing so early in the morning.´ - Rovanperä `Our tyre choice was successful. We learned a lot from yesterday´s experience.´ - Gomez `There was a hairpin and I came into it sideways into a rut, and the car just stopped. It was like driving into a hole filled with soft sand, and I stalled the engine, losing about six seconds.´

Stage Pos/ Driver/ Car/ Stage Time:

1 Mäkinen/Mannisenmäki Mit. Lancer V 12:02,0
2 Grönholm/Rautiainen Toyota Corolla WRC 12:03,6
3 Sainz/Moya Toyota Corolla WRC 12:07,9

-----------------------------------------------------------

SS 11, Vaheri 31,32km

Notes: - Mäkinen Arrived at the finish of SS11 (Vaheri) with the rear bumper hanging off. Remarkably, his time in the wet conditions is just 1.1seconds slower than last year, when it was sunny and dry. `I could have pushed a bit harder but that would increase the risk.´ - Grönholm Ran wide at the last junction on SS11 and spun into the tapes, losing around 15 seconds. `My time was very good until then.´ - Auriol Arrived at the finish of SS11 with damage to the Toyota, with wood in the front bumper and cooler, and the window is broken behind the co-driver. - Burns `I went off the road in one place, but luckily it’s OK. It’s what you expect here.´ - Vatanen Arrived at the finish of SS11 (Vaheri) asking who had ploughing the ditch in the stage. When told it was Auriol, Ari said: `It looked as though someone had been working for half a day with a bulldozer!´ - Rovanperä `I came to the last junction and stepped on the brakes, and nothing happened. I tried again and locked the wheels, spinning off. I had to spin back round in the field to get back on the road.´ - Kankkunen At Service Park Jämsä: `Tommi is driving very fast. I can´t do much more or go faster than this. I feel like driving but the car won’t go as fast as I’d like. Either the man is too old or the car is too old!´. Co-driver Juha Repo added: `Today’s stages are very nice for me to read the notes. I can find a good rhythm.´ - Bell `We have a relatively large oil leak in the car, and the oil is coming out between the headlights. I drove normally on the stage, and we’ll see what’s happening.´

SS 12, Juupajoki 30,94km

Notes: - Mäkinen At the end of SS12 (Juupajoki): `I had my neck massaged at the Service, and that helped.´ - Kankkunen `We broke a rim halfway through the stage, and although I could feel the vibration it didn’t disturb me too much - Grönholm: `That was a hell of a drive. I broke the windscreen on one heavy landing.´ Even before he saw his time, which was 10 seconds faster than Mäkinen, he said: `That will be a good time.´ - Auriol `I landed a bit strong at one point and hurt my neck a bit. But I’m not taking too many risks. It’s very slippery behind the others.´ - Burns `I didn´t have so much confidence braking in the narrow bits, and I wasn´t braking so well. But it’s still fun and I’m still learning. No problems with the car.´ - Rovanperä `It’s very warm in the car. It’s just getting too fast for us, we are lacking power.´ - Kangas The GpN leader said after SS12 (Juupajoki): That wasn’t good. I spun and had to revers. Overall I could definitely use more power.´ - Mäkinen At Service Park Orivesi: `I have a small pain in my back, but nothing serious. I think the jumps on SS10 aggravated it.´ Co-driver Mannisenmäki added: `The plan was to attack on the first stage, and you can see what we did. We are going flat-out, but under control.´ - Thiry `I’ve still not got much confidence, and I´m losing time on every corner. It’s a shame as it’s a beautiful rally. I just need to find the switch in my head to be quicker.´

-----------------------------------------------------------

SS 13, Sahalahti 20,50km

Notes: - Auriol Small repair to damaged sump guard. Didier had 10 minutes of intensive physiotherapy on his neck following an earlier heavy landing. - Burns Routine service which included new front wishbones and rear diff. - Hagström `We’ve not made any mistakes. We’re just watching the pace of Rovanperä as it’s nice to keep pace with the factory team guys.´ - A McRae Pirelli suggested a narrower tyre which had an immediate effect on their speed. - Burns: `That was really fantastic – fast, wide and smooth. I really enjoyed that.´

-----------------------------------------------------------

SS 16, Ouninpohja 34,55km

Notes: - Bell The clutch slave cylinder is not working properly, and has to start by revving the engine for about 30 seconds to build up the pressure in the clutch. - Grönholm Made it to the end of the SS16 (Ouninpohja) after losing over three and a half minutes in a ditch. The team reports that he got a puncture 5kms into the stage, and ran on the mousse from there. Two kms before the end, this failed which put him into the ditch, damaging the right side of the car. They finished the stage on the hub, and fitted the spare tyre to the car at the end of the stage. He continued to service apparently OK.

We will repair the diff at the end of the leg.´ - Rovanperä Coming down a long left hand hill on SS17 as the front tyre punctured. Slid off, car went on its side.
