OMV CEE Rally Team drops out on third day

Natalie Barratt hasn't been lucky at the "Propecia Rally New Zealand". The Brit hit a rock on the famous Whaanga Coast special stage and had to retire. The more vexing since WRC points in the FIA Production Car WRC were within grasp. The British OMV Team had been in excellent seventh place at the time of the accident.

Gearbox went up in smoke

Natalie Barratt started into the final day of the Rally New Zealand with two very good special stage times. This enabled the British OMV driver to defend seventh place in the PCar WRC. But fate struck after about seven kilometres into the Whaanga Coast special stage (SS 14). A large rock lay right in the middle of the ideal line. Barratt: "We approached this spot in fifth gear. There was no way to avoid this or else we would have found ourselves in the middle of the woods. Thus we hit the rock straight on. I immediately realised that the gearbox had been struck. I wasn't able to change gears and smoke rose from the engine bay. Thus we had to retire. It is a real pity since scoring points would definitely have been possible." OMV CEE Rally Team Manager Günther Aschacher adds: "Unfortunately we didn't have too much luck this year. After the two points won by Stepan Vojtech in Mexico this could have been a nice end to the season."
