Rally Ireland Clerk of the Course, Tom Nolan, and newly appointed rally secretary, Claire Walsh visited Swedish Rally organisers last week on a fact finding trip.

The Swedish Rally has long been identified as one of the best organised rallies in the WRC, and it was felt that by meeting and discussing the organisation of the Swedish event that the Rally Ireland organisers could accelerate their learning process. During the three day visit the Irish group met with Håkan Tonér (Media Officer), Ann-Louise Pettersson (Rally Secretary), Pär Ekholm (Marketing Manager) and Jonas Bjällfalk (Accreditation Officer) Next years Rally Ireland event will be critical as it will be observed by the sports governing body, the FIA for inclusion in future the WRC calendar.

'The Swedes have run one of the best rallies in the WRC for many years, and there is so much we can gain from meeting with them. It is so important for us to learn as much as possible from as many WRC organisers as possible,' said Nolan.

Earlier this year Rally Ireland representatives met with the organisers of the Finnish, UK and German rounds of the WRC as part of an effort to fact track the Irish WRC bid. Rally Ireland which will be held of 10-12 March is jointly funded by Fáilte Ireland and NIEC. It is already the largest North-South sporting event and is the most ambitious sporting initiative on the island of Ireland. If Ireland secure a round of the WRC it will ensure a global TV audience and millions of euros of direct expenditure on an annual basis.
