Gigi Galli and Giovanni Bernacchini have been obliged to retire after rolling off the road in special stage 16.
A tricky bend hidden behind a crest, after the jump the car landed on the road awkwardly, rolled and ended in a ditch. Driver and co-driver are uninjured. Other two cars went off the road in the same place.
It's been impossible to repair the Ford Focus, so the Italian team of the Stobart VK M-Sport team had to retire from the competition. This morning Gigi Galli and Giovanni Bernacchini started well, a good steady rhythm that brought them up again in third place overall.
"What a shame" said Galli "That section was part of the famous Ouninpohja stage, but this time was run in the opposite way and we did just two recce passages there. We took a left bend and it was longer than what we put in our pace notes, so we went out wide, went off road and rolled into a ditch. A real shame, we were doing fine so far".
This morning the 94 crews in the race left the Service Park at 06.00 in a nice clear and sunny morning. This has been the longest leg of the Finnish event, 168,25 timed kilometers divided into 10 Special Stages, some of them new.
The French crew of Citroen, Sebastien Loeb/Daniel Elena dominated the whole day and have been constantly attacked by the Finnish crew of the Ford team Mikko Hirvonen/Jarmo Lehtinen
Tomorrow the third and last day of Rally Finland will start at 08.20 and will provide 3 Special Stages, 40,47 timed kilometers. Crews will be back in Jyvaskyla at 13.30 for the Prize Giving ceremony.
