For the first time, WRC competitors will start the Deutschland Rally with a pre-established number of tyres at their disposal. On Monday August 16th, drivers were effectively called to register with the FIA the complete list of products from which they wish to be able to choose in the course of the 2004 season's opening asphalt encounter. In this particular case, the individual quota is 80 tyres - of which a maximum of 40 may actually be used - including two types of pattern (dry weather, wet weather), each available in a selection of compounds as a function of the conditions expected over the weekend ahead.

Polyvalence will certainly have been one of the overriding criteria in the minds of the drivers. For with the hindsight of the two previous Deutschland Rallies to guide them, they know how important it will be to combine performance and the need to cater for the event's traditionally fickle weather, as well as for the exceptionally long lapse of time between the moment they make their definitive choice for a given loop of stages and the actual start of certain tests!
