WILSON RECEIVES MONSTER WELCOME IN SPAIN

LEADING British FIA World Rally Championship driver Matthew Wilson will have a few more supporters out on the stages on Rally de Espana today.

The Stobart M-Sport Ford pilot took his place alongside fellow Ford driver Ken Block on Wednesday evening at the Stobart Monster Rally Roadshow. The event was staged in Salou, where rally fans from across the globe were given the chance to meet the WRC duo and to win the chance to sit beside Wilson in a Ford Focus RS World Rally Car. The prize was won by Jon Armstrong from Enniskillen in county Fermanagh, Northern Ireland.

"It was amazing. The speed was just unbelievable and so much faster than I had been expecting," said Jon.

"I've competed in a local rallysprint championship at home driving a Ford Fiesta ST but the [Ford] Focus RS WRC is far faster and it felt very smooth. Matthew was also very precise in his driving and I couldn't believe the pace he was taking on some of the corners. It was a fantastic experience. We came here for a holiday and also to catch some of the rally but I never expected to get a ride in the car with Matthew Wilson."

Wilson hopes he has won over a few more supporters ahead of the event.

"It was a great night - we and the event were very well received," said 23-year-old Wilson. "It was nice to meet the fans and spend some time with them because some of the time we only see them for a split-second out on the stages. So hopefully there will be a few more supporting the Stobart and Monster cars over the weekend, and we can give them something to watch."
