It was announced in Perth this morning (09.26 local time) that stewards of Rally Australia 2000 have decided to exclude Mitsubishi driver Tommi Makinen from the final results of the event after they found his turbocharger to be illegal (different to the homologated part) at post-event scrutineering.

They added that they did not believe the Finnish driver benefited from any performance gain with the illegal part and it is not expected that any further action will be taken.

All the other finishers therefore move up one place in the overall standings. This means that Peugeot's Marcus Gronholm takes his fourth win of the season here in Australia ahead of Subaru's Richard Burns (2nd) and Gronholm's Peugeot-Michelin teammate François Delecour (3rd).

The implications of this change are that Michelin has now definitely won the 2000 Manufacturers' World Championship in association with Peugeot. Even if Ford takes maximum points (16) in Great Britain in two weeks time, the French firm takes the title thanks to its superior number of outright wins since the start of the year.

In the Drivers' Championship, Gronholm's advantage over Burns is now nine points which vastly enhances his chances of taking the crown. Burns can still snatch the title if he wins in Great Britain, but only of his Finnish rival finishes outside of the top five.
