The fifth round of the 2014 WRC season is complete and a Rally Argentina winner has been crowned.
VW driver Jari-Matti Latvala won Rally Argentina, finishing the event a full minute and 26.9 seconds ahead of Sébastien Ogier. Third place Kris Meeke was another 4 minutes and 28 seconds behind the reigning WRC champion in his Citroen.
This is the 10th career Rally victory for Latvala and his second of 2014. He also won Rally Sweden a few months ago in February. Volkswagen Motorsport has now taken the top spot in all five events that have been run so far and no one sees that streak ending any time soon. This is Meeke's second career podium and comes off the heels of crashes in both the Mexico and Portugal rallies.
The Finn and then Frenchman swapped the lead multiple times on Friday before Jari-Matti finally started to pull away after the fifth stage. Andreas Mikkelsen and Thierry Neuville, who both re-entered the Rally on Saturday under Rally 2 rules, rounded out the top five. After retiring from the three of the first four events prematurely, it was a huge relief for Robert Kubica to bring home a 6th place finish, despite it being partly due to attrition.
WRC-2 winner Nasser Al-Attiyah rounded out the top ten.
The World Rally Championship returns to Europe for Rally Italia Sardegna (sixth round) from June 6 - 8.
