Ford finished second in the 2001 FIA World Rally Championship which ended this afternoon. Despite not scoring on the final round, the Rally of Great Britain, which ended today in Cardiff, Ford secured the runners-up spot for the second season.
Colin McRae and co-driver Nicky Grist claimed second in the drivers' series in their Focus RS World Rally Car, despite retiring from the rally on the opening leg. The two runners-up positions marked Ford's best world championship season since 1993. Team-mates Carlos Sainz and Luis Moya finished sixth in the standings.
Victory on the four-day, Cardiff-based rally went to Marcus Gronholm (Peugeot), who finished 2min 27.1sec ahead of team-mate Harri Rovanpera, securing the manufacturers' title for the French team. Third place was sufficient for Britain's Richard Burns (Subaru) to clinch his maiden world title by two points. <pre>
