Chinese manufacturer DMACK has joined Michelin as an FIA appointed tyre supplier to the World Rally Championship in 2011

The two brands applied to become suppliers following the FIA's decision to open the championship to more than one tyre manufacturer - a position held by Pirelli for the last three years.

Michelin announced on Tuesday that its application had been accepted by the FIA, and the Michelin name - not its BF Goodrich brand - would return to the WRC for the first time since 2005.

Michelin has a strong record of success in the WRC and has claimed 38 world championships titles. Of that total, 20 were in the manufacturers category, created in 1973, and 18 were in the drivers' category, officially introduced in 1979.

DMACK however is a brand new name to the WRC and is aiming its supply at privateer teams and support category competitors on a limited budget. The firm says evaluation of its new WRC range is being conducted in China - where they are manufactured - and that its gravel tyres will be available for competitors and teams to test from the end of October.

Pirelli meanwhile has confirmed that it will not supply tyres in 2011 because of concerns over the new regulations. Pirelli's motorsport director Paul Hembery said: "Pirelli is proud to have been the control tyre supplier to the World Rally Championship for the last three years, and we remain completely committed to the sport of rallying. Unfortunately, on World Championship level, we've been put in a position where the tyre rules have constantly changed.

"If the current circumstances change, I would never rule out Pirelli's return to the World Rally Championship in the near future," he added.
