Update after Stage 2, Belmeken Lake

The Stobart M-Sport Ford Rally Team have successfully completed the opening two stages of Rally Bulgaria and are both placed in the top ten as they prepare to tackle the afternoon's 59.34km stages.

Matthew Wilson/Scott Martin have not driven on asphalt in their Ford Focus RS WRC since Rally de Espana in 2009 and struggled with adapting to the fast, tarmac road surfaces. However, Wilson successfully cleared the first two stages and by the end of SS2, the 23-year-old driver was placed in tenth position overall.

Per-Gunnar Andersson and co-driver, Jonas Andersson, took a cautious approach in the opening morning loop and are currently placed in eighth position overall, 32.6 seconds behind BP Ford Abu Dhabi's Jari-Matti Latvala. The 30-year-old Swede reported that he will be looking to improve on his times during the afternoon loop.

Stobart M-Sport Ford driver Matthew Wilson said:

"The opening stage was really difficult and possibly the worst stage to start a rally with -- it was the longest of the event and it's been a long time since I've driven on tarmac so it was a rude awakening. We suffered from long brake travel and the stages were dirty on some corners. There were also some damp patches and the second half of SS2 was very bumpy. We're going to make some small changes to the car at service and this will help to build my confidence for this afternoon's stages."

Stobart M-Sport Ford driver P-G Andersson said:

"I was cautious during the two stages this morning but I'm happy with the car and how everything is going so far. I've had no problems with the brakes and the ride height of the car is good. The main change we'll make to the car during service is to stiffen everything up a bit. It was dry for the stages this morning and I hope it will stay that way for the rest of the day. I'll certainly be looking to go quicker this afternoon but I'm pleased with how everything is going so far."
