Woodward Racing Hires Brooke Tatnell
MURRIETA, CA (January 23) -- Brooke Tatnell, the only Australian driver to win a World of Outlaws "A" Feature, will drive for Woodward Racing against the best in sprint car racing in 2007, the team announced Tuesday.
"We couldn't be happier to have Brooke drive our 'Black Deuce,'" Team Owner Larry Woodward said. "Not only is he a world-class racer, he's also a great guy to have on our team. We're looking forward to seeing him race up front with the World of Outlaws in 2007."
Tatnell, who won five World of Outlaws feature races while driving for Rush Racing last season, became the first driver from "Down Under" to win in sprint car racing's premier series on August 18, 2003, at the Jetmore Motorplex in Jetmore, KS.
Tatnell, a three-time Australia Sprint Car Poll "Driver of the Year," won three World of Outlaws main events in 2005. He received the World of Outlaws' Vivarin Perseverance Award following the 1999 season.
"I'm excited about racing for Larry," Tatnell said just before boarding a plane for Melbourne, Australia. "I'm excited about racing for Larry. It's unfortunate what happened with the Rush team, but it's good to go to a car owner like Larry who has experience and knows what it takes to run a successful team. It's a big task for anybody to take on, with it coming together this late, but we're expecting to have a good year. I'm really looking forward to it."
Brooke's wife, Amy, gave birth to their daughter, Emma, last month. The five-time World Series Sprintcar champion received the $20,000 first prize for winning the WSS season finale Saturday at Brisbane International Speedway.
"We've be doing OK down here," Brooke said. "We've been consistently quick. We should have won a couple more races. We're capable of better, but you're going to have off nights now and again."
Woodward, who started racing quarter-midgets at the age of nine, has been a sprint car owner and promoter for more than 20 years. His cars have raced with the California Racing Association, Northern Auto Racing Club and World of Outlaws. Jac Haudenschild, Dean Jacobs and Joey Saldana are among the drivers who have raced his cars in World of Outlaws competition. "The Wild Child" drove Woodward's non-winged sprint car to victory in the "Mopar Million" at Eldora Speedway in 2003.
Woodward, who owns the Volcano Joe's Coffee Company, promoted the inaugural "California Versus Hawaii" sprint car event in 1987.
Tatnell will begin driving Woodward's "Black Deuce" in the World of Outlaws' season opener -- the 36th Annual DIRTcar Nationals Presented by Mopar Speedshop -- February 9-11 at Volusia Speedway Park.
